Piala Bakiam is an exciting and heartfelt golf tournament at RSGC, where a lady golfer teams up with a male golfer for an 18-hole game, honouring Mothers past and present.
Last year’s winners, Faiz and Shurin present the Piala Bakiam to this year’s winners, Lilian Liew and V. Nathan
The idea was born when a member of the Buaya Group at RSGC received news of his mother’s passing while on the golf course. Inspired by this emotional moment, the group held the first Piala Bakiam tournament in 2022 and continued the tradition with another thrilling event this August. Although originally this game was supposed to be held in conjunction with Mothers Day, it has now taken on even more meaning as it is the only event in RSGC which involves the Men inviting the Lady golfers to join them in a day of golf followed by a celebratory Prizegiving Lunch.
Initially it was not easy to get Ladies to play with Men they did not know (although many of the Buayas’ wives joined the game), especially as they had to partner them in a friendly competition. However this year there was great enthusiasm among the Ladies and the Buayas achieved a full field of 22 Ladies. Each flight appointed a Member to book a tee time with most waking up at the crack of dawn to book an Early Bird slot. Buaya Dr Fadzil did a great job of organising things remotely all the way from Hokkaido where he was on holiday with his wife.
Buaya Monsoon Rules were declared and the Buayas generously sponsored lunch for the Ladies. Those who chose to play with their wives were ‘fined’ an extra RM100.
It was a day of great fun for all and the day ended with promises from the Ladies that they would not From left: Tg Muin, Nicole Teh, Shelley Mathias and Silahuddin miss the next edition.
