Highlights from the 2025 Annual Club Championship: Qualifying Round

The RSGC Annual Club Championship is one of the most prestigious events in our club’s history, dating back to 1896, when J.G. Glassford claimed the first title. Over the years, the tournament has evolved from a single 18-hole stroke play event to its current format, which includes stroke play qualifying rounds followed by match play elimination. At present, 16 players—the top 15 qualifiers plus the defending champion—advance to the knockout stage after two rounds of stroke play.

This year, 58 players teed off on January 18–19, 2025, battling for a spot in the match play stage. The first round was played on the New Course, followed by the second round on the Old Course. With only 15 spots available, every shot counted.

DAY 1

The New Course presented a fair but challenging test on the first day, with greens running at 9.5 on the stimpmeter. Leading the pack was Edgar Ramani, who scored 75. Close behind were Leong Chun Yan and William Houng-Lee, both on 78, while Casey Ng finished at 79. Defending champion Mohd Faiq and Wilson Lian were both on 80.

With one round to go, the leaderboard was tight and the pressure was on for the final day of qualifying on the Old Course the next day

DAY 2

With everything still to play for, the competition moved to the Old Course for the final 18 holes of the qualifying rounds on Sunday, the next day. Past champion Aiden Kei rose to the challenge, firing a 74—the best round of the weekend—to claim the top spot in the 2025 qualifiers with an aggregate score of 156.

The battle for the remaining spots was fierce, with Wilson Lian, William Houng-Lee, and Edgar Ramani all tied at 158, leading to a countback to settle their final placements. The tight leaderboard highlighted the fierce competition, setting up an exciting match play showdown in the weeks ahead.

With the final 16 players set, the race for the coveted Club Championship title continues. Who will emerge victorious? We look forward to seeing how the match play unfolds!
