In the spirit of this year’s Wimbledon Championships, the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) hosted a friendly one-day tennis tournament on its grass courts. With everyone dressed in traditional Wimbledon whites, RSGC fielded a team of 11 men and three women to compete against the Royal Selangor Club (RSC), the Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club (RPDYC) and The Raintree Club. As grass courts are our home surface, we were quietly confident that the conditions would play to our strengths.
The tournament was played in a round-robin format, with each tie comprising five matches. Each match was played to the first team to win six games. The line-up for each tie was as follows:
1. Men’s Doubles – Combined Age: 100 years
2. Men’s Doubles – Combined Age: 110 years
3. Men’s Doubles – Combined Age: 120 years
4. Women’s Open Doubles
5. Mixed Doubles – Combined Age: 100 years
RSGC narrowly lost its opening tie to The Raintree Club, 2–3. However, we bounced back in style with a convincing 4–1 victory over the hosts, RSC. Our final tie against RPDYC proved to be the toughest of the day, and a win was essential to keep our title hopes alive. The team rose to the occasion, edging a hardfought contest 3–2.
At the end of the roundrobin stage, three teams were tied on match results. The final standings were therefore decided on countback based on the total number of games won. RSGC emerged as champions by the slimmest of margins—just four games—ahead of RPDYC, The Raintree Club, and RSC.
It was a wonderful day of friendly competition, camaraderie, teamwork, and sportsmanship, reflecting the true spirit of the game. Our sincere thanks go to RSC for being such gracious hosts and for providing excellent food and refreshments throughout the day
