The torrential rain did not dampen the players’ spirits as they gathered for the inaugural Tennis Interclub Friendly between The Royal Selangor Golf Club and Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
Players gathered at the Poolside Pavilion expecting an early start, while the visiting team made their way to the Club despite heavy traffic. Everyone arrived ready for an afternoon of friendly competition.
RSGC was led by Team Captain Edward Leung, while RPDYC was represented by Tennis Convenor Kamalesh. Edward made regular trips to the grass and synthetic courts to ensure the surfaces were ready and safe for play. He also organised the pairings and schedule several days in advance. Spring rolls and samosas were served outside the Covered Court as light refreshments
Following an intense warm-up, the official interclub matches commenced at 3pm on Courts 11 and 12, followed by Courts 8 and 9. A total of 10 matches were played, comprising three Men’s Doubles, three Women’s Doubles and four Mixed Doubles. Matches were played in a first-to-six-games format, with a three-point deuce.
RPDYC got off to a strong start, winning the first three matches and putting the home team under pressure.
The pressure was on for Ishan Nair and Keith Tan to pull one back. Their determination and aggressive play paid off as they defeated the equally competitive pairing of Chang Zhen Vhen and Gabriel Liu 6–3.
The victory swung the momentum back in RSGC’s favour, with mother-and-daughter duo Mary and Sasha triumphing over Sagunthala and Pauline Chong 6–2. Jason Tan and Kevin Hoong then levelled the tie at 3–3 with a narrow 6–5 victory over Ramasamy and Wong Yok Mong.
Rain disrupted play once again, causing a slight delay. RPDYC took advantage of the break and returned stronger, winning the remaining four matches 6–1, 6–0, 6–2 and 6–1.
Among the players taking part was Amy Kong, who competed at the age of 77. A familiar face within the RSGC Tennis community, Amy’s participation was a highlight of the day.
Once the official matches concluded, the visiting team invited several RSGC players to continue playing on the grass and indoor courts. Grass courts are increasingly rare, and the opportunity to enjoy them should not be taken for granted. The RPDYC players were impressed by our grass courts and had plenty of praise for the Club’s facilities.
The fellowship continued at The Green from 7.30pm, with opening speeches by the respective captains and an exchange of mementoes. This was the first Tennis Friendly between the two Clubs, strengthening the ties between RSGC and RPDYC and paving the way for more interclub events in the future.
A buffet-style dinner was served, featuring Yong Chow Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Fish Fillet, Crispy Chicken Wings and Stir-Fried Vegetables, followed by mini brownies and freshly sliced fruits.
The evening continued over dinner, with plenty of conversation and camaraderie between Members of both Clubs.
The inaugural Tennis Interclub Friendly was more than a day of competition. It was an opportunity for Members of RSGC and RPDYC to connect, enjoy the Club’s facilities and build a friendship that we hope will continue for many years to come.
