Fraser’s Hill: A Cool Escape From the City

Sometimes, all it takes is a short trip to feel like you have completely escaped the city. For me, that place was Fraser’s Hill. Located in Pahang, the hill station offers something that is increasingly difficult to find in the Klang Valley: cool weather, greenery and a slower pace of life. Getting there, however, is an experience of its own.

THE JOURNEY UP
The drive to Fraser’s Hill is not for the faint-hearted. The winding roads become narrower and more challenging as you make your way up, requiring patience and concentration, particularly for those who are not accustomed to driving through hilly terrain.

But once you reach the top, the change in atmosphere makes the journey worthwhile. The weather is noticeably cooler, the surroundings are covered in greenery and everything feels a little more relaxed.

For my stay, I chose Wyndham Garden Shahzan Fraser’s Hill, which provided a comfortable accommodation for exploring the area.

One of the pleasant surprises was the hotel’s seafood buffet. It was nothing too fancy, but I enjoyed the variety and found it a satisfying way to end a day of exploring. There was something especially enjoyable about returning to a warm meal while enjoying Fraser’s Hill’s cool weather.

STARTING AT THE CLOCK TOWER

The Clock Tower is one of the first places many visitors come across when exploring Fraser’s Hill. Surrounded by greenery, it is a good starting point to take in the character of the hill station.

Around the Clock Tower, you will also find a range of small cafés serving coffee, drinks and desserts. It is a nice place to stop and enjoy the surroundings, especially with the cool weather and relaxed atmosphere.

My friends and I had the best time walking from one café to another while taking in the views. There was no need to rush from one place to the next, which was part of the charm.

HORSE RIDING AND ARCHERY AT THE PADDOCK
One of the highlights of the trip was visiting The Paddock.

Set against the greenery of Fraser’s Hill, The Paddock is a large open space with plenty to do, including horse riding and archery.

There is also plenty of room to walk around, take photographs and simply enjoy the surroundings.

I decided to give archery a try, and the instructor patiently taught me how to hold the bow, aim and shoot. I have to admit, I enjoyed it more than I expected. It was surprisingly fun trying to get the arrows on target, even though I definitely needed a few tries.

Outside The Paddock, we also came across locals selling raw honey. Of course, we had to give it a try. It was a small but memorable part of the trip, and I enjoyed getting to taste something produced locally in the hills.

Sometimes, it is these unplanned discoveries that become part of the memories you take home.

AIR TERJUN JERIAU
Another part of the trip took us to Air Terjun Jeriau. The journey took about an hour, but the drive itself offered plenty of scenery along the way.

The visit turned out to be more adventurous than expected, as I also had the opportunity to ride an ATV. After the winding drive up to Fraser’s Hill, getting behind the wheel of an ATV added another kind of excitement to the trip.

It was muddy, a little chaotic and definitely more adventurous than simply taking a walk around town.

Fraser’s Hill also has a golf course, making it an interesting destination for those who enjoy combining a getaway with a round of golf. With its cooler climate and surrounding greenery, it offers a different setting from the usual city golf experience.

A QUIET AFTERNOON ON THE LAKE
Perhaps one of my favourite experiences was riding the duck boat on the lake.

This is an activity I would particularly recommend doing with friends. Paddling around the lake together, surrounded by greenery and hills, makes for a relaxed afternoon and plenty of opportunities to take photographs.

There is no particular rush. You can simply enjoy the view, the weather and the company.

After spending so much of the trip moving from one activity to another, having a quiet afternoon on the water was a welcome change of pace.

A FEW LITTLE SOUVENIRS
Before leaving Fraser’s Hill, I picked up a few small cacti.

They were simple souvenirs, but I liked the idea of bringing home something small from the trip. Along with the memories of the cool weather, raw honey and time spent outdoors, they became little reminders of the weekend.

A WEEKEND WELL SPENT
Fraser’s Hill is not necessarily the easiest destination to reach, and the drive up requires some preparation and patience. But once you arrive, the experience is quite different from the usual weekend getaway.

There are activities for those looking for a little adventure, from horse riding and archery to ATVrides and a visit to Air Terjun Jeriau. There are also quieter moments, whether walking around the Clock Tower, enjoying a coffee with friends or paddling across the lake.

For me, that balance was what made the trip enjoyable.

It was not about ticking off as many attractions as possible. It was about having enough to do while still having time to slow down, enjoy the weather and appreciate the scenery

After spending a few days surrounded by cool air and greenery, the drive back down to Kuala Lumpur felt like a gentle reminder that sometimes, a change of pace is all we need.
