Lady Golf Captain’s Corner [July 2024]

RSGC LAO 2024

Azarine the winner

All activity in the Ladies Golf Section has been focused on the 47th RSGC Ladies Amateur Open Championship which is taking place at our club from 23 to 25 July, with Practice Day on the 22nd. This is by far the biggest golf event at our club and it is the only private club Ladies Golf event in Malaysia which is world-ranked on the World Amateur Golf Ranking, something all RSGC Members can be truly proud of. What began as a social event in 1971 has evolved into a serious competition attracting many aspiring golfers from the region. Our objective is to make this tournament a major regional event in the coming years, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. This year, we have a stellar field led by our defending champion, Mirabel Ting, who is ranked 24th top amateur golfer by World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), (the highest achievement ever by a Malaysian golfer) with many WAGR players from Australia, China, Japan, India, Pakistan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Our two Ladies from China

We have been blessed with the generous support of main sponsors MKH Berhad, Omar Salim, and AmBank. Royal Selangor International Sdn Bhd is the sponsor of the winners’ take-home trophies. The Official Hotel is Impiana KLCC, and the Official Drink is Etika Sdn Bhd. The Courtesy Car partner is Pantai Bharu Holdings. As you can see many of our own Members have come forward to support our Ladies, as they have done over the many years of the Championship. This is definitely the way it should be. For that, we are truly grateful.

I am also very grateful for is our Members coming forward to sponsor less privileged young girls to play in our LAO. We have several young girls from other states who are up-and-coming competitive golfers but who just cannot afford the entry fees and accommodation costs. Members have been generously supporting these girls through the years, even all the way through their college education, and for that I thank you. If you and your friends would like to sponsor one of these players do let me know.

So do come and watch these world-class players when the competition begins. What a great opportunity, right here on our own RSGC golf course.

Club Morning Refreshments after the game

CLUB MORNING

June’s Club Morning was wellsubscribed with 15 players. I am really pleased to see so many new younger players join our Ladies Golf Section and foreign ladies from China too. The Ladies Club Morning is a great place to meet new players, and new Members and enjoy a social game where more experienced players are on hand to teach some rules and club policies. Do come and join the next one. The recent evening weather has stopped us from holding our Club Evenings for the moment as it has been raining very often. We hope to be able to have one soon, especially for our career women.

A NEW COMPETITION

I am so excited to announce we finally have something for our many low-handicapper ladies to fight for. A new competition The Piala Tunku Abdul Rahman Ladies Edition. The Men’s Piala Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra competition is the RSGC Masters. Now we finally have our own 3-day Gross competition for Ladies of handicap 18 and below. I am sure many of our top Lady golfers will be eager to participate. Save the date: 2-4 August.

We end the month of June with the SICC Interport game at home and I will report on it next month. Meanwhile, all systems go for the 47th RSGC LAO. Wish us luck!
