A well-deserved snack after the nine holes
October was a busy month for the Ladies Golf Subcommittee (LGSC) and I must thank the LGSC Members for working very hard to organise our annual Local Ladies vs. International Ladies event and our social game with the Caddies. Meanwhile rehearsals began in earnest for our performance piece for the Triangular Games competition with SICC and HKGC which the RSGC Ladies will host in early November. We have chosen to sing and dance to the famous Hari Raya song Alamak with special lyrics of course. Let’s hope everyone gets it right on the day!
Zuraidah Ismail wins for handicap 29 and below
Club Morning
Another fun morning as the ladies gathered for our monthly Club Morning event. This time it was a little more special as it was Zakiah Mustapha’s birthday. Zakiah and Sima Lee shared the winner’s prize and Sima promptly handed over her prize to Zakiah as a birthday present. Meanwhile past Lady Captain Zuraidah Ismail was the winner in the handicap 29 and under category. Do try and join us next month, which will be a little different – we will be having referees join us to teach golf rules both on and off the course. Don’t miss it!
Happy Birthday Zakiah Mustapha!
Ladies and Caddies
I decided that we should show some appreciation to our Caddies even though we did not have our official Ladies and Caddies game this year. So, we held a small private social game and the Ladies could choose their Caddie partners. Read all about the fun we had in a separate report.
Congratulations Amber Kim Hyun Jung on passing her golf test!
Lady Golf Captain’s Prize
We certainly broke all recent records with a field of 60 players for this game which was held on the 13th of September. We have a delayed report of this game written by Azarine Rahman in a separate story.
Congratulations Fong Shir-Ning on passing her golf test
Ladies Triangular Interport Games
Next month I will be reporting on the big one – our annual Triangular. As RSGC is hosting the event this year we hope to make it memorable and take the Trophy home.
More and more Ladies are coming forward to sign up for our games, especially our varied and entertaining social games. Once they experience the fun we have, they tell their friends and so our field is growing bigger and bigger. This is fantastic for the Ladies Golf Section as our primary aim is to improve our Ladies’ golf experience and encourage more Ladies to take part in our Fixtures. All it takes is the first step. Most of the time you will be playing with people of the same skill and experience level, so no need to be nervous, just sign up. See you at the next one!
Lady Golf Captain’s Prize: A Tale of Tee-Offs
It is quite momentous when you have 60 ladies sign up on the clipboard for the annual Lady Golf Captain’s Prize competition, a 3ball team game playing a Texas scramble format. I had not seen such a phenomenon. That would mean 20 flights. Then I heard a funny story about Lady Golf Captain Ai-leen Tan having to remove the sign-up clipboard as the response was so overwhelming and unexpected – she had not foreseen so many players signing up, certainly a number that has not been seen for many years. This is definitely testament to her popularity and leadership.
I was ecstatic when Jocelyn asked me to be on her team. How could I say no to a Best Ball type of play? I find it the most enjoyable of the various golf games. Picking up your ball and walking over to the best ball for the next strategic shot was fun, especially as there was not much pressure and the pace of play was fast. The best part of the day was that it was a team effort and everyone spurred each other on. My team consisted of Jocelyn and Peg. We chose red and blue as our team colours, representing our bright and happy go lucky natures. See, how much fun RSGC makes this game? So much fun that they get you to be fashionable first before you play.
This competition was taken quite seriously. I saw plenty of lady golfers practicing the week before for the Texas Scramble. Our team also practiced a couple of days before to see our team’s dynamics and our strengths. There was also a nice team effort rule included in which we were to have six drives from each player, so each player contributed to the score instead of relying too much on a single person.
So, the day came to play. I was happy to just be out with friends in a relaxed manner. Recently, I had read that if you relax and have fun the muscles in your body do not get tense and you will play better. Maybe that is why 60 ladies signed up to participate. They knew they would have fun with their flight mates, all dressed up, feeling good and that is all that matters. A delicious lunch was provided and getting to know the 59 other ladies present was a great opportunity to meet more golfers – young players, seniors, high handicappers to low handicapers all in one room. The best part was the diversity on display, with participants from all over the world in addition to our Malaysian home crowd.
So, the next time you come across a clipboard sign-up sheet saying Texas Scramble please sign up! Don’t be intimidated. You’re not actually going to Texas. Contact me and I would be happy to be on your team. Just by singing up, you could already stand to win the lucky draw prize I was eyeing – a ticket to Bangkok with a three-night hotel stay. Leena Yunus won that prize, congratulations Leena! So be sure to sign up for the next Texas Scramble game.
