On 15 March 2025, RSGC successfully hosted its inaugural Majlis Berbuka Puasa with the Thalassaemia Association of Malaysia, uniting members and guests in support of a vital cause. The event, which marked the culmination of a fundraising campaign, aimed to raise both awareness and funds for those affected by thalassaemia in Malaysia.
The evening began with a communal iftar, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere during the holy month of Ramadan. This was followed by a presentation from the Thalassaemia Association, shedding light on the realities of living with the condition and the critical need for greater public understanding.
Medical advisor of Thalassaemia Association of Malaysia, Dr. Hishamshah Mohd Ibrahim explained that Thalassaemia is a hereditary blood disorder, and it’s estimated that 5 to 6% of Malaysians carry the gene—rising to 8% in Sabah. While being a carrier does not present immediate health problems, the combination of two carriers—particularly beta thalassaemia—can result in a child being born with thalassaemia major. This serious condition requires lifelong blood transfusions and extensive medical care.
One of the key messages of the evening from was the importance of early testing, especially for young people and couples planning to marry. Pre-marital screening and genetic counselling are crucial steps in preventing the inheritance of this condition. There is also a need to address the stigma surrounding thalassaemia and marriage, with the event encouraging open conversations and informed choices.
In addition to raising awareness, the event called on the public to donate blood—a single pint can save up to three lives, a powerful reminder of how one simple act can have a lasting impact.
The evening closed on a high note, with heartfelt appreciation extended to all donors and attendees. Through this initiative, RSGC not only reinforced its commitment to social responsibility but also helped amplify the message that awareness, testing, and compassion are key in the fight against thalassaemia.
