The Green was packed with many Members bringing guests to enjoy the show. Everyone mingled in a relaxed setting while enjoying complimentary free flow drinks and popcorn, creating a casual and cheerful atmosphere as everyone settled in before the show began. This final edition of Live At The Green began with a warm welcome by CPRESC Convenor Yasmin Yusuff. She introduced the members of the CPRESC and the MarComm department staff who attended in full strength and gave a brief round-up of the SubCommittee’s portfolio and achievements over the last 3 years.
At 8.50pm, the first musical set kicked off with the ever-charismatic Russell Curtis leading the performance, accompanied by an exceptional eleven-piece band. Featuring backup singers and a full brass section, this was the largest ensemble ever hosted at Live at The Green, and true to expectations, it brought an extra spark to the night. The band delivered a powerful tribute that had the crowd singing along from the very first beat, especially when they opened the night with the legendary We Will Rock You.
The crowd immediately came alive, clapping, chanting and stomping in rhythm with the band, fully embracing the anthemic energy of the song. The connection between the performers and audience was instant, setting the tone for a night filled with excitement and nostalgia. 2 birthdays were celebrated that night and Russell brought them on to the dance floor for a Men Vs Ladies dance-off.
As the band took a break between sets, the crowd was treated to surprise complimentary nasi lemak as a change from the usual pizza, brought in by the troupe of waiters as has become traditional for this event.
The transformation of The Green with seating arranged in a casual, intimate style, using sofas, armchairs and low coffee tables, surprised first-timers with the lounge-style atmosphere.
The second set began at 10.15pm and carried the evening through to 11.00pm, rounding off what many described as one of the most enjoyable nights at the Club this year. There was no shortage of singalongs, laughter and appreciation for the talented musicians who brought Queen’s music back to life in spectacular fashion. It was definitely a successful end for the term of this CPRESC.
