RSGC Tennis JDP Quarterly Medal Producing Future Champions

The first edition of the RSGC Tennis JDP Quarterly Medal tournament was successfully held on Sunday, 29 March 2026, across both covered and outdoor courts. A total of 23 children registered and competed across various age groups, namely Red Ball (4–8 years), Orange Ball (9–10 years), Green Ball (11–12 years), and Yellow Ball (13–16 years).

The tournament served as a crucial platform for children enrolled in the Junior Development Programme to showcase their skills and sportsmanship in a competitive environment. It was also heartening to see parents cheering and guiding their children to reach their full potential.

The day began at 7:30am with player registration, followed by a briefing by Coach Zaki and Coach Agil from Tennis Town Academy. The tournament was led by a team of dedicated coaches and also featured professional tennis player Daania Daniella Hazli, who assisted with umpiring duties. There were numerous questions from parents regarding the tournament format and scoring, and kudos to Coach Zaki for addressing each of them with clarity and professionalism. Matches began at 8:15am, with all categories kicking off simultaneously.

The Red Ball players were divided into two groups, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals and finals. The courts came alive with enthusiasm and determination from the young players. Nik Zayn emerged as the Red Ball champion, followed by Roger Teh. Rafa Rafiq and Chang Jae Hyun finished third and fourth respectively. Despite their young age, participants displayed commendable effort and determination, reflecting their early potential to become future RSGC rising stars.

In the Orange Ball category, only three players competed, and a round-robin format determined the final standings. Zayden Khaldun finished first, followed by Teong Jyeh Yi and Kayla Mavis. It is hoped that more participants will join the second edition, planned for June 2026.

The Green Ball category offered a higher level of competitive play, where players demonstrated proper technique, tactical awareness, and composure under pressure. Nine-year-old Lionel Tan was upgraded to the Green Ball category due to his LTAM Junior ranking of Green 1. He went on to become champion, winning 2–1 against Teong Chern Hao, who finished second. Georgina Ong and Knight Chan placed third and fourth respectively, proving that months of coaching have indeed paid off. It is evident that the introduction of Tennis Town Academy has been beneficial to the development and growth of young tennis players at RSGC.

Lastly, four experienced players competed in the Yellow Ball category, which took place on the newly installed synthetic turf courts. These juniors displayed tremendous technical ability, endurance, and sportsmanship. Their parents can certainly be proud of their performance and commitment. Ayril Rashman topped the group, followed by Fong Jae Ren, Tan Wey Kin, and James Ong.

Upon completion, players were presented with customised medals along with words of encouragement from Mr. Justin Ong, Convenor for Sports & Sports Project, and Dr. Ken Fong, a member of the Sports & Sports Project committee. They expressed sincere appreciation to the Sports Department staff, JDP coaching team, and parents for their continued support in developing quality tennis players at the club level.

The club’s aspiration is simple: to produce young athletes who will progress to state and national-level competitions and make everyone proud.
