The focus for the month of February was on the Club Championships. While it is the Men’s Championship that receives most of the attention, the Ladies were no less determined to practice and train for the glory of lifting the Ladies Club Champion trophy. For those whose handicaps do not qualify to compete for this Trophy, there is the Bronze, which is no less hard fought for. Played over two days, both competitions this year featured a smaller field than usual, no doubt because they were played smack in the middle of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Kudos therefore to the ladies who still went out to practice daily, celebrations notwithstanding. Congratulations to our 2024 Ladies Club Champion, 11-year-old Sim Jane, who not only lifted the Ladies’ Trophy, beating defending Champion Kelly Low by just one stroke but was crowned Junior Girls Champion too, an outstanding achievement for one so young. With a 2-day gross score of 171, Jane definitely has a bright future in front of her. Best Nett went to Mika Nishimura who had the distinction of being the only player who played under par on the first day.
Our congratulations too to May Ho, our 2024 Bronze Champion. Runner-up was Rika Lai while Sakiko Aoki won Best Nett. Every year during the Club Championship stories abound of water tragedies on the 4th Old. However this year the Bronze competition conversation was all about the 17th Old instead as some competitors returned with tearful tales of being beaten by the bunkers on the dreaded 17th and ending up with many strokes over par.
CLUB EVENING
The Club has recently seen a growth in new younger Lady Members. As they are mostly working ladies, they are unable to join our monthly Club Morning, held on the first Tuesday of every month. I decided that in order to include them in this fun social game, we would hold a Club Evening on a Saturday every few months. The first one took place this month and we had three flights. You can watch a video of my pre-game briefing by clicking on the QR code on this page.
Unfortunately, the third flight had just reached the first green when the siren went off. The social aspect of the event then went into full swing as the Ladies gathered in the Main Lounge for drinks, snacks and camaraderie while waiting for the siren to sound the all-clear. Eventually, we abandoned the game but some of the ladies who had by then made new friends went back out to continue the game. This is exactly what the Ladies Club Morning (or Evening) is all about, making new friends, meeting players who are on the same level of the game as you are and having a good time playing your favourite sport. We look forward to welcoming more working lady golfers at our next Club Evening.
CELEBRATIONS
A special game was organised open to all Lady golfers to celebrate the Year of The Dragon, culminating of course with a Yee Sang lunch. We received a very good response and hope to organise more games in conjunction with Festive celebrations.
I am pleased to see many more younger players on the course and hope they will join us in our competitions and many social games. The RSGC Ladies Golf Section is said to be one of the most active Ladies Golf groups in the country and we certainly keep our ladies busy. Do sign up for our events and I look forward to meeting you.
