Back to Basics. GRIP.

This month, I aim to underscore the significance of maintaining a solid grip on your golf club. Above, you’ll find images depicting three distinct grip positions, each impacting your accuracy and strike differently.

THE STRONG GRIP is a common poor grip position, that often leads to shots that hook or veer sharply to the right of the target.

THE NEUTRAL GRIP is the position you’re ideally trying to achieve, where the ‘V’ formed by both hands points towards your right shoulder, represents the ideal stance.

THE WEAK GRIP is less common with the right hand, is more common with the left and typically results in a slice.

THE COMBINATION GRIP is another common occurrence, where the left hand adopts a weak position and the right hand a strong one. This results in all kinds of shots for example out of three shots one goes left, another straight and the other goes right!!!

Achieving the correct grip involves ensuring both ‘Vs’ point towards your right shoulder. To facilitate this, I’ve included pictures demonstrating effective grip checks.

Picture 1 highlights a reliable method to verify the position of the ‘Vs,’. You can see very visibly where they are pointing.

Picture 2 showcases a less effective approach. It shows a poor way of checking your grip position you won’t be able to see where they are pointing.

Picture 3 assists in attaining the proper grip with your left hand.

Picture 4 guides the positioning of your right hand.

Once your grip is correctly set, it’s crucial to maintain appropriate pressure. Many golfers make the mistake of gripping too tightly, resulting in a tense swing rhythm. Ideally, the pressure should resemble gently squeezing a tube of toothpaste. Incorporating a pre-swing waggle of the golf club can also help relieve tension.

I’ve crafted this article as a general guideline. Should you have any questions or require further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Happy Golfing,
