Lady Golf Captain’s Corner [Oct 2024]

If I had forecast a quieter season for the Ladies towards the second half of the year, I was truly mistaken. This month I have much to report on. As promised, the Lady Golf Captain vs LGSC game, Piala Bakiam, the Buayas and Ladies game which has its own report in this magazine, the results of the Selangor Cup, our trip to SICC, and the annual Golden Girls Trophy competition, for those Ladies who are slightly north of young! And we welcomed a few more new golfers who passed their golf test last month. In fact, the more regular players have been commenting that there are more and more new faces appearing at each game. This of course is an excellent thing as the RSGC Ladies Golf Section grows and strengthens into one of the largest and most active golf groups of our club.

Piala Bakiam

3 years ago, Buaya Member Dr Nathan initiated a competition in honour of his late mother and called it Piala Bakiam. This was to be an annual event with the Buaya Group inviting RSGC Ladies to join them in a golf competition partnering the Buayas, followed by a Prizegiving Lunch paid for by the Buaya Group. What a wonderful idea! It is the only event of its kind at RSGC and this year the ladies were not so shy and a full field was achieved, You can read about the game in this issue of the magazine. We are really grateful to the Buaya Group for their support of the ladies.

RSGC VS SICC Interport at SICC

18 ladies signed up for this annual trip down South for 2 days of matchplay competitions and this time on 2 different courses – the pristine Pierce-Millenium and the 100 year-old Bukit course which many of us had not played on for some time. The warm hospitality of the SICC ladies ensured we all had a good time. Many ladies joined this interport game for the first time and as usual RSGC Members resident in Singapore came forward to join our team. I was very pleased that we won 3 matches and drew 1 on the first day as we historically do not usually have a good away record against SICC. However having experienced almost a whitewash when they visited us earlier in the year, they were fully prepared with their strong players to ensure they reclaimed the CC Tan/Leong Hoe Yeng Trophy. Final score 23 to 13. A big thank you to our ladies for a good effort.

Lady Golf Captain vs the Ladies Golf Section Subcommittee

It seemed that the LGSC Members were all out to ensure a good battle. LGSC Members Jocelyn Ng, Ziltawati Tajuddin and Kanae Yutani, did their best to recruit as many ladies as possible so much so that we ended up with a huge field of 44, including a record number of 13 Japanese ladies who, on a Friday morning, would normally play in their weekly Midori Kai game. With 10 flights in the clubhouse the score was a draw so everyone was on tenterhooks waiting for the last flight to come in. Fortunately for me, the Captain’s team won by a very close 2 points and the winners took home their prize of RM10 cash collected from the losers. A big thank you to Madame Mami Takahashi, the wife of the Japanese Ambassador for sponsoring many great Lucky Draw prizes for the ladies.

Club Morning

We had a great turnout of 21 Ladies, this time hosted by Jocelyn Ng. We welcomed three first-timers, Yap San San, Fiona Ng and Kelly Liu. As the format chosen for the Lady Golf Captain’s Prize game to be held later in the month is 3ball Texas Scramble, with Ladies forming their own mixed handicap teams, we decided that the Ladies would have a chance to learn and practice this format for this edition of Club Morning. The winning team of Dorothy Ng, Ena Hu Xin and Liu Xue Ting achieved a gross score of 37 over 9 holes. Let’s see how they do in the actual competition.

Golden Girls Trophy

The only competition exclusively for those of the young age of 60 and GOLF TESTS above. Read about it in a separate report in this magazine.

Ladies Changing Room Renovation

We are very pleased to see that so many ladies have filled in the comments and suggestions sheet for the changing room renovation project. As a reminder, the sheet will remain at the Attendants’ counter for further suggestions. All comments will be taken into consideration once work begins. The Ladies have been waiting for almost 7 years for this exercise so we want to make sure when completed, it will be a project we will all be happy and proud of. Once again, a reminder that we will be needing all Lady Ordinary Members to vote YES on the crucial decision-making day.

Final Notes

Congratulatons to the formidable Alyah Tan for winning the Selangor Cup and Wong Ai-Dee for taking the Runner-up prize. Currently I am overwhelmed but excited by a field of 60 Ladies for the upcoming Lady Golf Captain’s Prize competition. This number has not been seen for many years and I hope is the sign of more good times to come. The LGSC has also decided to have a small version of our Ladies and Caddies game, much to the delight of the Caddies. Practice for our Triangular performance begins soon. All these in my next report.
