A Quartet of Aussie Quaffing Wines

Sometimes we can overthink wine, so we decided it was time to sample four uncomplicated Australian white quaffing wines that would be suitable to grace your next social gathering. The Australian wine scene isn’t all about big, bold Shiraz and oaky Chardonnay. A fresh wave of easy-drinking, white quaffing wines is making its mark. These wines are bright, approachable, and made for casual sipping rather than complex cellaring.

Think zesty Pinot Grigios from Australia’s Riverland, flavoursome Chardonnays from the Riverina, and crisp, dry Rieslings from the Clare Valley. They deliver clean, fruit-forward flavours without the weight, often with lower alcohol, and a refreshing finish. Increasingly, winemakers are embracing minimal intervention, allowing regional character to shine in the glass. These wines are crafted for easy enjoyment. Australia’s quaffing whites may be laid-back, but they are anything but boring. They offer quality, consistency and charm in every glass. These are wines without the waffle; made to be enjoyed, not overthought.

This style of wine is unpretentious, wallet-friendly, and perfect for everything from barbecues to casual midweek dinners. Here are four Aussie whites (three still table wines and a sparkling wine) we recently sampled, and all make better drinking when chilled.

WHISTLING DUCK CHARDONNAY

The Chardonnay fruit for this wine was sourced from the irrigated Riverina region in New South Wales. The warm growing conditions in the Riverina allow the Chardonnay grapes to ripen fully, developing generous fruit flavours (it’s also home to Australia’s renowned Semillon dessert wines). As such, they are typically full-bodied, rich, and fruit-forward, reflecting the region’s warm, sunny climate. Centred on the town of Griffith, the region attracted Italian migrants who brought with them winemaking traditions from their homeland. The Riverina is a diverse agricultural region with a strong food and wine culture influenced by those of Italian heritage. The producer of this wine is, not surprisingly, Calabria Family Wines. The estate’s Whistling Duck Chardonnay is pale straw in colour with lively edges encompassing a bouquet of citrus and tropical notes complemented with a hint of oak. It is a fresh, zesty wine, balanced by a creamy palate. Chardonnay remains one of the best-known white grape varieties, appreciated by wine lovers around the world. It is the leading white grape variety grown in Australia, making up almost 50% of the total harvest. It is a versatile food wine too, especially the unoaked styles. This wine will pair well with most seafood dishes, including those with creamy sauces. It is also ideal for mild Malaysian curries. Many Australian wine labels use native animals to help sell their products, and in this case, it is the spectacular plumed Whistling Duck that frequents the irrigated lands in which the grapes for this wine are grow.

GOMERSAL CLARE VALLEY RIESLING

Riesling was once quite popular, but appears to have lost its way, with some connoisseurs unsure of how to appreciate it. For example, German Rieslings from the Mosel or Rheingau regions were an important part of the wine list served on the Titanic. The Clare Valley, a high-altitude region north of Adelaide, has earned its reputation as Australia’s premier Riesling producer. Here, warm days and cool nights create ideal conditions for this variety, preserving its hallmark acidity while allowing full flavour development. The region’s diverse soils of limestone and slate shape distinctly expressive styles: vibrant and citrus-driven in the former, tightly wound and mineralic in the latter. These wines are more concentrated in flavour, with a steely structure and impressive longevity. Always dry, they offer lime, blossom, and mineral notes, with a racy freshness that makes them incredibly drinkable when young, yet capable of ageing for decades. While Gomersal has a Barossa Valley cellar door, it works with selected South Australian grape growers to source fruit from other regions and produce an excellent portfolio of wines. This Riesling, from a single Clare Valley vineyard, was picked during the cool evening to help preserve the crisp fruit freshness and natural acidity. It combines lifted aromas of citrus fruits, floral notes, and lychee with crisp pear, lemon, and lime flavours. The result is a balanced wine with complexity and length. Like Chardonnay, Riesling is an ideal wine to pair with seafood and spicy dishes like ikan bakar or those from Thailand.

WINE MEN OF GOTHAM NV DRY WHITE

We thought it would be fun to include a sparkling white wine with the three still wines. This sparkling wine exhibits delightfully lifted and fruity aromatics. Driven by early picked Chardonnay, the palate is rich and full of flavour. It is refined with a fine bead (bubbles) and is balanced with good acidic levels to provide a clean, dry finish (known in France as brut) that lingers on the palate. While most sparkling wines are expensive and saved for celebration, this is a more casual wine, as suggested by the crown seal more commonly seen on beer bottles. Had it been made in France, it would have been labelled as Blanc de Blanc, which, if our French is correct, means ‘white from white’ (Champagne is made from two black-skinned grape varieties and one white; the white being Chardonnay). Because it is made from 100% Chardonnay, the flavour profile of this sparkling wine leans toward green apple, citrus and pear, and sometimes with a mineral edge. Compared to traditional sparkling blends that include the two black-skinned varieties of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, Blanc de Blanc is usually lighter and brighter. The ‘NV’ on the bottle means that this wine is made using grapes derived from several years or vintages. Don’t let any of this deter you from buying and serving this fine sparkler for everyday celebration.

WINE MEN OF GOTHAM PINOT GRIGIO

In France, the grape variety is known as Pinot Gris, while in Italy and South Australia, it is called Pinot Grigio (it’s Grauburgunder in Austria). Gotham Wines was established as a négociant wine business in 2004 and, in just over ten years, has evolved into a portfolio of wine brands enjoyed around the world. In late 2013, Gotham Wines found a home at our winery in Langhorne Creek, where it has flourished ever since. Gotham Wines produces outstanding, great-value wines under the unique and quirky Wine Men of Gotham label. This Pinot Grigio displays lifted aromas of citrus fruits, pear and lime. The palate is clean, with crisp acidity and a lovely array of floral and fruit flavours that give the wine both balance and length. We recommend pairing it with lightly spiced chicken or seafood dishes, cream-based pastas, Caesar salad, and soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert. If you are travelling to East Malaysia, this is a great wine to enjoy with umai (Malaysia’s raw fish or ceviche). Like all the wines listed, Pinot Grigio is best enjoyed chilled, making it a popular choice for Malaysia’s warm weather and casual dining scene.
